Après les événements de BATMAN – METAL, épuisé et blessé, Bruce Wayne doit cependant se préparer à l'irruption de nouvelles menaces au sein de l'univers DC. Le Chevalier Noir découvre avec stupéfaction que Le Batman Qui Rit a survécu à son affrontement avec le Joker et qu'il planifie une nouvelle stratégie susceptible de déséquilibrer le Multivers.
